USM's Rono Receives Cross Country Academic All-American Honors

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss' junior Janet Rono is among 53 individual cross country athletes earning Academic All-American honors for 2001-02 NCAA Division I by the Women's Intercollegiate Cross Country Coaches Association.

In order to qualify, athletes had to have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 as a sophomore, junior or senior and place in the top 15 (or 10%) of their NCAA Regional.

Rono, a native of Kapsabet, Kenya, has an overall GPA of 3.58 in medical technology. She became the first Southern Miss women's cross country runner to qualify for the NCAA Cross Country Championship, following her third-place finish at the NCAA regional meet.
