Two Marquette Cross Country Runners Named Academic All-District

Milwaukee -- Marquette University senior Joe Herington (Westerville, Ohio)and junior Susan Barth (Bluffton, Ind.) have been named as 2002
Verizon/CoSIDA District V All-Academic honorees for cross country and
track. The pair now becomes eligible for the national ballot.

Herington, who posted a 3.48 GPA in his marketing major, enjoyed a fine
2001 cross country season, earning Conference USA and All-Great Lakes
Region honors. The Golden Eagles' top finisher in six meets, he claimed first place out of 121 contestants at the Bradley Invitational. Named the MVP of the cross country squad, he helped Marquette to a second-place finish at the C-USA Championship by finishing seventh out of 90 runners.

He was a four-time member of the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll
recognizing a GPA of 3.00 or better. He served as the President of
Marquette's Student-Athlete Council in 2000-01 and organized a fund-raiser for that group at Midnight Madness this past October.

Barth, the owner of a 3.86 GPA in exercise science, also brought home
Conference USA and All-Great Lakes Region accolades in cross country this past fall. She helped MU to the program's second consecutive C-USA championship and was tabbed as the league's Runner of the Week in
mid-September. She captured first place in the 3,000-meter run at the 2002 C-USA Indoor Championships and ran at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the 5,000 meters. During the outdoor season, she took home first place in the 5,000 meters (17:01.16) at the C-USA Outdoor Championships. In addition, she established a school record in the 10,000 meters at the Penn Relays with a NCAA Provisional qualifying time of 34:12.72 and recently finished second in that event at the C-USA Outdoor Championships. A volunteer with Special Olympics, Barth has served as a representative on the school's student-athlete council. She will perform an internship this summer at the United States Olympic Training Center in Marquette, Mich.

To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must have a 3.20 cumulative GPA or higher and be a starter or important reserve. The District V team members are from Division I schools from Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota and Wiscoinsin.
