SMU's Rachael Forish Lead C-USA Women to NCAA South Central Regional Cross Country Title
Nov. 13, 2006 IRVING, Texas - SMU's Rachael Forish becomes the first Conference USA women's cross country runner to win an NCAA South Central Regional title Saturday in Waco, Texas. The junior led a pack of 108 runners with a 6K winning time of 20:30.4, nearly 10 seconds faster than her nearest opponent. Forish will represent SMU and C-USA in the NCAA Championships held on Nov. 30 in Terre Haute, Ind. Forish's victory was her second straight win, having captured the C-USA Cross Country title nearly two weeks ago. As a team, SMU placed fifth, out of 21 teams, with 149 points. The fourth-ranked UTEP men's cross country team will have to wait until Monday to find out if they are heading to the NCAA Championships as a team. UTEP placed third -- missing the automatic ticket by one spot -- at the NCAA Mountain Regional in Albuquerque, N.M., Saturday. The Miners scored 86 points behind defending champion Colorado (59 points) and BYU (67 points) in the 15 team field. Junior Stephen Samoei was the top finisher for UTEP, taking fifth in 30:17.2 in the 10k race. Samoei is a lock for the national meet as an individual if the Miners do not qualify for the championships as a team. UTEP's usual fourth runner Nicodemus Ng'etich dropped back to 31st after experiences back pains midway through the race. He crossed in 31:55.4. Elias Koech was 61st in 33:06.9.
