C-USA Baseball Update

  • Updated Standings

It was a wild Friday in Conference USA baseball and when the dust cleared, several records were set and a number of elements relating to next week’s C-USA Tournament became a little bit clearer. TCU set school and Conference USA records for runs (30) and hits (35) in a 30-2 win over Louisville. South Florida punched its ticket to New Orleans with a 9-5 win over Memphis.

Tulane’s 5-4 win over East Carolina assured the Green Wave of the No. 3 seed in the C-USA Tournament. Tulane will play the 7:30 p.m. CDT game next Wednesday against an opponent to be determined, meaning that the No. 2 seed (TCU or Southern Miss) will play its first game at 4:00 p.m. CDT on Wednesday.

Southern Miss will earn the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament with a win at Houston on Saturday or a TCU loss to Louisville. If UH and TCU wins on Saturday, then the Horned Frogs can earn a share of the regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the league tourney by virtue of winning a tie-breaker with USM against the then-No. 5 seed East Carolina (TCU swept ECU, while USM lost two-of-three to ECU). The No. 1 seed will play the second game of next week’s tournament at 12:30 p.m. CDT on Wednesday.

The one matchup that has been determined in the opening round of the C-USA Tournament is that East Carolina will face Houston in a rematch of last year’s C-USA Tournament championship game at 9:00 a.m. CDT on Wednesday, the opening game of the tourney.

Charlotte earned the final berth of the C-USA Tournament when its game on Saturday afternoon at Cincinnati was rained out. This eliminated UAB and Memphis from a possible spot in the tourney.
