Houston Forces an Elimination Game With 10-5 Win Over UAB

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Houston third baseman Bryan Pounds went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI and the combination of Donnie Joseph, Ty Stuckey and Jimmy Raviele joined forces to keep a hot-hitting Blazers' team at bay as fourth-seeded Houston defeated No. 8 seed UAB, 10-5, during day four of the 2008 Entergy Conference USA Baseball Championship Saturday afternoon at the new Greer Field at Turchin Stadium. Houston jumped out to the early lead with three runs in the bottom of the first - including a two-run homer off the bat of left fielder Jake Stewart. The Cougars added a run in the second, but UAB cut the lead to 4-2 in the fourth courtesy of a two-run single by catcher Allen Aubin. Houston answered with three runs in the fifth and added single tallies over the team's next three at-bats. Stuckey (3-3) earned the win after allowing three runs on six hits and a walk while striking out one in 4.1 innings out of the bullpen. UAB starter Johnny Volk (2-1) was saddled with the loss after allowing seven runs (five earned) on five hits and a walk while striking out three in 4.1 frames. Both teams pounded out double-digit hits as the Cougars tallied 10 and the Blazers notched 11. Ryan Lormand, Stewart and Pounds all had multi-hit efforts for UH. Pounds led the way, while Stewart and Lormand both had two knocks each. Stewart and Zak Presley each had two RBI. Allen Aubin led the way for UAB with a 4-for-4 performance and two RBI, while Phil Bell went 3-for-5. With the win, Houston (37-22) forces an elimination game with the Blazers (26-33) and the two teams will battle again later tonight to see which team earns a trip to the C-USA Championship Game.
