The second day of the 2004 Conference USA Tournament, presented by Sterling Bank, is in the books. Three one-run games highlighted the day's action. Houston's Rob Johnson closed out the day with a game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth inning that scored Kevin Roberts from second base and gave the Cougars a 6-5 victory over East Carolina. The win advances UH to Saturday's semifinals where the Cougars are joined by UAB.
For the first time in C-USA Tournament history, a game was decided on a wild pitch. UAB's Josh Miljavac wrapped up a three-run rally in the bottom of the ninth inning by scoring from third on Bill Edwards' wild pitch to lift the Blazers to a 7-6 win over Memphis. The Blazers advance to the semifinals for the first time since their last C-USA Tourney appearance in 2000.
Earlier, Austin Adams hit two home runs, including the game-winner in the seventh inning to lift TCU to a 4-3 victory over Louisville, eliminating the Cardinals. The Horned Frogs advance to Friday to face the loser of tonight's Houston-East Carolina contest.
In the first game of the day, a surprising elimination game between Top 25 teams, Southern Miss defeated Tulane, 16-4. The Golden Eagles advance to Friday's game against the loser of the UAB-Memphis contest, while the Green Wave are eliminated.
Ryan Frith led USM's charge with three hits, including a pair of home runs, and four RBI. Brad Willcutt had a double and a thre run home run, while Jason Lowery and Jody Blount each had three hits.
