Four Conference USA players were named to the Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball All-American team, it was announced by the publication on Thursday. Two players were named as first team All-Americans, one was honored on the second team and one was named to the third team.
TCU junior righthander Lance Broadway and Tulane junior lefthander Brian Bogusevic were two of the seven pitchers that earned first team All-America status. Broadway, the Conference USA Pitcher of the Year, is the first Horned Frog to earn first team All-American status since Royce Huffman in 1999. Bogusevic, a first team All-C-USA selection, followed up his preseason All-American honors by being named to the postseason team.
Broadway has been as one of the country's most productive pitchers this spring, tying for the national lead in victories with 14. The 14 victories are a new school record as well as a new record in Conference USA, breaking the old mark of 13 set by numerous pitchers.
Broadway put together a streak of 36 1/3 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run earlier in the year and currently owns a 1.67 ERA, a league-best in C-USA. The Grand Prairie, Texas native has fanned a league-best and school record 144 batters this season. He has been named Conference USA Pitcher of the Week four times this season and has earned Pro-Line Cap National Player of the Week twice.
Bogusevic led the top-ranked Green Wave in ERA (2.57), wins (12) and innings pitched (112.0), while tying for the team lead in opponent batting average (.235), ranking second in strikeouts (114) and strikeouts per nine innings (9.16). The Oak Lawn, Ill., native was named to the Conference USA All-Tournament team and has posted the third-highest single-season victory total in league history entering NCAA Championship play. A two-way performer, Bogusevic was limited at the plate early in the season due to a hamstring injury, but is batting .324 with seven doubles and 20 RBI in 108 at-bats.
Owings, the 2005 Conference USA Player of the Year, was named to Collegiate Baseball’s second team All-American team as a utility player. At the plate, Owings batted .326 while leading the league in slugging percentage (.707) and the team in triples (3) and home runs (16). The transfer from Georgia Tech also smacked 15 doubles and drove in 54 runs, while drawing 36 walks.
On the mound, Owings has struck out a team-best 117 batters, while walking just 17 in 106.2 innings pitched. He owns a record of 9-4 and an ERA of 3.63
Southern Miss senior Brad Willcutt, the first team All-Conference USA catcher, earned a spot on the All-American third team. The Columbus, Miss., native led Southern Miss with 16 home runs, 21 doubles, 82 RBI and 149 total bases this season, helping Southern Miss to a 41-19 season, for the school’s third consecutive 40-win season, a school record. His 82 RBI lead Conference USA. Willcutt became the school's career leader in runs (202) in the regular season finale and also owns the school record for doubles (72) and RBI (236). With 289 career hits, he needs four more to pass Jeff Cook for the all-time leader in that category.
