Houston will be a number one seed at the Mesa (Ariz.) Regional, East Carolina is a No. 2 seed and Louisville, South Florida and Tulane are all No. 3 seeds at their regionals. It is the fourth straight year that Conference USA has produced at least one number one seed. Conference USA's five selections are exceeded only by the Southeastern Conference, which had seven teams chosen for the field.

NOTING C-USA BASEBALL IN 2002 The 2002 season has shaped up as perhaps the most competitive and most successful season in Conference USA's short history. Below is a brief overview of the 2002 season to this point.
Houston has been ranked in or near the Top 10 for most of the season. East Carolina has been in the national rankings for most of the season. Louisville, Southern Miss and Tulane have also been ranked this season.
Seven C-USA teams (East Carolina, Houston, Louisville, South Florida, Southern Miss, TCU and Tulane) have posted at least one victory over a nationally-ranked non-conference opponent.
Conference USA teams have combined to win 28 games against teams that were nationally-ranked at the time they played.
Seven times Conference USA has defeated a team ranked in the Top 10.
Eleven of C-USA's teams have beaten a ranked opponent (including conference foes) in 2002
Six C-USA teams (East Carolina, Houston, Louisville, South Florida, Southern Miss and Tulane) posted 35 or more victories.
Conference USA has faced 16 of the top 23 non-C-USA teams ranked in the latest (May 27) Baseball Weekly/ESPN Coaches poll at least once this season, defeating 12 of them at least one time.
Conference USA has five players that have earned National Player of the Week honors this season.
C-USA has four of the 40 semifinalists for the Dick Howser Trophy, given to the top collegiate baseball player (JESSE CRAIN and BRAD SULLIVAN of Houston, MARK JURICH of Louisville and JAMES JURRIES of Tulane). Only the ACC and SEC have more candidates for the award than Conference USA.
Conference USA has two of the 10 finalists for the Johnny Bench Award, given to the nation's top catcher (CHRIS HAMBLEN of Cincinnati and CHRIS SNYDER of Houston).
Baseball America tabbed four C-USA players as midseason All-Americans.
C-USA NOTEBOOK CHARLOTTE The 49ers dropped all three games at Memphis the final weekend of the year. Freshman OF ADAM WILLARD was 4-for-9 (.444) in the series with a home run . Sophomore OF BRAD HOLVORSON recorded his first career multiple home run with a pair of round-trippers in the series opener. Junior RHP JOHN MAINE struck out seven in his final 2002 appearance on May 16 to close the season with 103 strikeouts. He ranks third on Charlotte's all-time list with 295.
CINCINNATI Junior C CHRIS HAMBLEN was 11-for-21 (.524) in the final week of the season with two home runs and two doubles for a .905 slugging percentage. He hit safely in all five games. The 2002 season ended Cincinnati's run of three-straight 30-win seasons, as the Bearcats won 26. UC actually outscored its opponents 347-346 and led the league with 74 home runs. Four Bearcats hit 10 or more home runs and seven drove in at least 20 runs. Versatile senior NATE FISH started 51 games at four different positions this season (C, 1B, 2B and 3B), hitting seven home runs, one more than he had his previous three seasons combined.
EAST CAROLINA ECU made its 18th NCAA appearance and won a pair of games at the Clemson Regional, losing twice to the host Tigers. The Pirates won their first-ever Conference USA Championship with a win over Houston in the championship game of the C-USA Tournament in Kinston, N.C. on May 26 It was the third straight conference tournament title for East Carolina, which won the 1999 and 2000 Colonial Athletic Association titles, before joining C-USA. DARRYL LAWHORN was named Conference USA's Freshman of the Year as well as the C-USA Tournament MVP. He set a new ECU school record for hits in a season with 104 and owns the school's freshman season record for home runs (19) and RBI (68). Lawhorn ranks among the nation's top three freshmen in home runs and batting average (.416). The Pirates posted a team ERA of 3.64 (its lowest since 1994) and struck out 454 batters.
HOUSTON The Cougars swept three games at the Mesa Regional, including two over host Arizona State, outscoring their opponents 25-7. Houston wil move on to the Super Regional for the second time in three years, playing at Texas. The Cougars enter the Super Regional having won 14 of their last 15 games. Their 47-15 record gives them a .758 winning percentage, which would be the best winning percentage in school history. UH has 22 wins against teams that are in this season's NCAA field. Junior RHP BRAD SULLIVAN, Conference USA's Pitcher of the Year, is 12-1 with a 1.93 ERA and a schoolrand conference-ecord 151 strikeouts. Junior SS/P JESSE CRAIN is the first player in C-USA history to be named All-Conference at two different positions. At the plate, he is batting .317 with 13 doubles, 11 homers and 47 RBI. On the mound, he has allowed just one run (unearned) in 34 innings pitched, going 4-0 with nine saves. Houston has tied a school single-season record with 14 saves. The unit has set a new school record with 525 strikeouts, breaking the old record of 516 set by 1997 team.
LOUISVILLE For the first time in the program's 93-year history, the University of Louisville baseball team played in an NCAA Regional. The Cardinals played in the Atlanta Regional, but lost to Georgia and Coastal Carolina. Head Coach LELO PRADO was named Conference USA Coach of the Year and will also lead the USA National Team this summer in the FISU World Championships in Italy. Junior OF MARK JURICH was a first team All-C-USA selection after batting .365 with 16 home runs and 60 RBI. The 16 home runs were the most by a U of L player since Matt Berger hit 22 in 1995. Freshman LHP ZACH JACKSON posted 10 wins this season, tying him with Scott Reburn (1984) for the most single-season wins by a Louisville pitcher. The 10 wins are the most ever by a U of L freshman. The Cardinals set school records for conference wins (21) and overall victories (39). Louisville has hit 69 home runs this season, 30 more than last year's team.
MEMPHIS The Tigers closed out the 2002 season on a four-game winning streak after sweeping Charlotte in the final series of the year. Senior CF PAUL REUER closed out his career by going 6-for-11 in the series with a double in each game and two RBI. His single in the bottom of the ninth inning gave Memphis an 11-10 win in the series opener. Senior C BARRETT SMITH hit his team-leading 12th home run of the season on Friday. He finishes his career in sixth place in home runs (27), sixth in hits (191) and seventh in RBIs (133) on the U of M career records list.
SAINT LOUIS Saint Louis won six of its last nine C-USA games to earn a spot in the conference tournament. Junior RHP COREY LAWSON recorded eight wins and nine complete games. Both numbers tie the school records held by 1965 All-American John Marcum. He was a key part of a Billiken pitching staff that lowered its ERA from 6.01 last season to 4.71 this year. The unit also recorded 327 strikeouts with 167 walks and accomplished these feats despite not having 2001 First Team All-Conference pitcher BEN HUTTON, who missed the entire year following shoulder surgery. Junior IF RYAN MURPHY led the team in batting (.337), doubles (13) and RBI (37), while posting 15 multiple-hit and eight multiple-RBI games.
SOUTH FLORIDA The Bulls advanced to the Tallahassee Regional title game where they dropped a 13-6 decision to top-ranked Florida State. The title game appearance was USF's second; the Bulls lost in the 1986 South II Regional championship game, also to FSU. Junior LHP RYAN GLOGER led four Bulls who were selected to the All-Regional Team. Gloger tossed his first career complete game against UCF to send USF to the title game. USF came back from a pair of six-run deficits and scored three in the bottom of the ninth to eliminate the Hatters and then rolled by UCF 7-2 later that night. Freshman C DEVIN IVANY hit .467 at the Regional and a team-best .367 in eight post-season games. The staff's 5.07 ERA was the lowest at USF since 1997. Sophomore RH reliever established USF's single-season appearance record in the season's final game when he made his 41st appearance. South Florida stole 110 bases, the program's fourth-highest total ever. The lineup hit 54 home runs, the most since slamming 71 in 1997 and the seventh-most ever at USF.
SOUTHERN MISS Southern Miss finished the season with a record of 36-22, which marked the second-best record during CORKY PALMER'S five-year tenure at USM and fourth season with 30 or more wins. The Golden Eagles have improved on 2001 season totals in wins (36), runs (420), hits (619), doubles (128), home runs (54), RBIs (376), total bases (925), walks (251), hit by pitch (79), stolen bases (64), ERA (4.07) and opponent's batting average (.270). GRIFF ISRAEL was hit by a pitch 19 times, setting the school's single-season hit-by-pitch record. Junior LHP SHEA DOUGLAS (10-3) posted a career-high 108 strikeouts, the first time a Golden Eagle has had over 100 strikeouts since 2000 and second since 1993. Eight players accumulated double-figure doubles, led by ALLEN WINNINGHAM and CLINT STOY, both with 19.
TCU The Horned Frogs finished the 2002 campaign with a 30-29 record, which includes 12 victories over teams that were in the NCAA field. TCU's 19 conference wins tied for the most-ever by a Horned Frog club. Entering NCAA play for five other C-USA teams, junior OF TERRY TROFHOLZ (.446) remains on pace to set a new conference record for batting average, breaking the old mark of .427 set by Houston's Goefrey Tomlinson in 1997. His 94 hits was the second-highest total in TCU history. The Frogs played their final game at the TCU Diamond on May 14 when they defeated Metroplex rival Texas-Arlington, 6-3. The Frogs posted an all-time record of 867-604-8 at the facility, including a 296-172 mark under coach LANCE BROWN.
TULANE The Green Wave made their fifth consecutive NCAA appearance, going 1-2 at the Baton Rouge Regional. Senior infielder JAMES JURRIES, the 2002 Conference USA Player of the Year, led the team in nearly every offensive category this season, including batting average (.400), slugging percentage (.750), home runs (20) and RBI (74) while tying for the top spot in stolen bases (30). Junior centerfielder JON KAPLAN was second on the team in hitting with a .333 batting average and also stole 30 bases. Junior leftfielder/first baseman AARON FELDMAN, rounds out Tulane's top three hitters with a .316 clip, including 11 doubles, two triples and three homers. Sophomore LHP JOEY CHARRON had nine saves this season, the third-most saves in a season in school history. He struck out 77 and walked just 21 in 66 2/3 innings. Tulane has won seven of its last 10 and has won at least 33 games for the ninth straight season.
UAB The Blazers closed out the 2002 season in dramatic fashion on May 18, with PETE GIANGROSSO scoring on a suicide squeeze play to give UAB a 4-3 win over South Florida in 12 innings. UAB reliever CODY CILLO (2-2) worked 9 2/3 innings in relief of starter JEFF BROWN, holding the Bulls scoreless and allowing only one hit, with two walks and five strikeouts. It was the longest outing of the season for Cillo, who made all 27 of his appearances out of the bullpen in 2002.
