Nineteen C-USA Players Selected in MLB Draft
A total of 19 Conference USA players were chosen in the 2002 June Major League Baseball Draft, which concluded on Wednesday evening. Houston shortstop/pitcher Jesse Crain was the first Conference USA player chosen, going to the Minnesota Twins in the second round. Ten of the 12 schools that play baseball in C-USA had at least one player taken. Leading the way with four selections was Houston, which will play at Texas this weekend in an NCAA Super Regional. 2001 College World Series participant Tulane and south Florida had three players chosen while East Carolina and TCU each had two selections. Charlotte, Cincinnati, Louisville, Saint Louis and Southern Miss each had one player chosen in this year’s draft. The World Champion Arizona Diamondbacks selected four C-USA standouts, more than any other major league organization. The Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland Indians, Philadelphia Phillies and Texas Rangers each chose two Conference USA players. The complete list of Conference USA selections follows:
