Lance Broadway
|
For just the second time ever, Conference USA had two players selected in the first round of the major league baseball draft, which began at 12:30 EDT on Tuesday. TCU righthander Lance Broadway, Conference USA’s Pitcher of the Year, was selected by the Chicago White Sox with the 15th overall selection. Tulane lefthander Brian Bogusevic, a first team All-American was chosen by the Houston Astros with the 24th overall selection. Only the ACC (five) and Pac-10 (four) had more first round selections than C-USA. The only other time that C-USA had multiple first round picks was 2003, when three C-USA players were taken in the opening round.
A total of 12 Conference USA players were taken on the opening day of the draft. Top-ranked Tulane led the way with four selections, while East Carolina had three and Houston and TCU each had two players selected. The draft will continue on Wednesday with rounds 18-50.
