Rice's League-Record 14 Draftees Lead C-USA's 29 Selections in MLB Draft
June 8, 2007 Rice established a new Conference USA record by having 14 players selected in the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft, which concluded Friday evening. Junior lefthander Joe Savery was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies with the 19th overall selection of the major league baseball draft to lead the selections. Savery's selection marks the third straight year that a C-USA player has been taken in the first round of the MLB Draft and the fourth time in the last five years that the league has produced at least one first round pick. Rice junior shortstop Brian Friday was the second C-USA player taken, going to the Pittsburgh Pirates in the second round. Former UCF star pitcher Tim Bascom, who sat out last season after being selected in last June's draft by the San Diego Padres, was taken by the Baltimore Orioles in the fourth round, followed by Tulane pitcher Sean Morgan, who went to the Arizona Diamondbacks four selections later. The Owls record 14 selections included eight pitchers. Tulane set a school record by having six players chosen. East Carolina produced four picks, while Southern Miss had two. Houston, Memphis and UCF each had one player taken. The 29 total selections were the second-most in league history. In 2004, the league produced 32 draft picks. C-USA's 2007 MLB DRAFT PICKS Rd.
