Four C-USA Baseball Players Named Freshman All-Americans

Brad Emaus

Four Conference USA baseball players have been named Freshman All-Americans by Collegiate Baseball, the newspaper announced on Wednesday. Tulane third baseman Brad Emaus and Southern Miss second baseman Trey Sutton are joined by TCU teammates Andrew Walker and Matt McGuirk on the squad. C-USA has produced at least three Freshman All-Americans in each of its first 10 seasons.

The 2005 Conference USA Freshman of the Year and a first team All-Conference USA selection, Emaus heads into NCAA Super Regional play this weekend batting .346, tied for best among all league freshmen. He has smacked 19 doubles, hit 13 homers and driven in 56 runs while starting all 62 games for the top-ranked Green Wave.

Sutton also batted .346 this season in his debut campaign in Hattiesburg, starting all but one game this season. The second team All-C-USA selection had 15 doubles, six home runs and 41 RBI. Sutton’s selection gives Southern Miss at least one Freshman All-American in each of the last four seasons.

Walker and McGuirk each earned a spot on the Conference USA All-Freshman team while helping the Horned Frogs make back-to-back NCAA regional appearances for the first time in school history. Walker’s .580 slugging percentage was best on the team and he finished second on the club in home runs with 11. He batted .310 and also hit 10 doubles with 38 RBI. McGuirk missed a couple of weeks with a shoulder injury, but still hit .317 with 12 doubles, seven home runs and 38 runs driven in.
