Days after being selected as the 15th overall pick by the Chicago White Sox in the 2005 Amateur Draft, TCU's Lance Broadway has been named one of three finalists for the Roger Clemens Award. The award is given out annually by the Greater Houston Baseball Association to the top pitcher in collegiate baseball. The trophy will be awarded during a dinner at the Marriott Westchase Hotel in Houston on July 14.
Broadway has been arguably the top pitcher in college baseball this season, finishing his junior campaign with a school and Conference USA record 15 wins versus one loss. He compiled a 1.62 ERA in 117 innings pitched. He set a new single season school record with 151 strikeouts, while walking just 35 batters all year. He was named Conference USA Pitcher of the Year, thanks to a 9-0 record in league play and a 1.66 ERA in 10 starts.
Already named First-Team All-America by Louisville Slugger and Second-Team by Sports Weekly, Broadway was named a finalist for the Xanthus-Dick Howser Trophy on Tuesday, given to the top player in college baseball. He is still a semifinalist for the Brooks Wallace Award, another award reserved for the best overall player in college baseball. Over the course of the season, the Conference USA Pitcher of the Year garnered NCBWA Pro-Line National Pitcher of the Week honors twice and the Conference USA Pitcher of the Week award four times.
Broadway is one of just two players to be finalists for the Xanthus-Dick Howser Trophy and the Roger Clemens Award. Having the same distinction is Miami's (Fla.) Cesar Carillo. The other finalist for the Roger Clemens Award is Tennessee's Luke Hochevar.
