Seven C-USA Players Honored as NCBWA All-Americans
The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) has released its annual All-American teams and Conference USA is represented by seven players on the three-team squad. The seven All-Americans are the most ever named by one organization in the seven years of C-USA Baseball. Voting for the NCBWA All-American teams is conducted by the 200-plus members of the organization that includes writers, broadcasters and journalists that cover college baseball. Houston righthander Brad Sullivan continues to add to his trophy case, being named a first team NCBWA All-American. Sullivan was named Conference USA’s Pitcher of the Year this season after helping the Cougars to the league’s regular season championship and trip to the NCAA Super Regional. The Nederland, Texas, native has compiled a 13-1 record with a 1.82 ERA and set UH and Conference USA single-season records with 157 strikeouts in 128.2 innings of work. Sullivan came on even stronger down the stretch, allowing only one run in his last 36 2/3 innings and tossing shutouts in three of his last four starts. Three players earned a spot on the second team: Tulane senior second baseman James Jurries, Houston junior shortstop/pitcher Jesse Crain and TCU outfielder Terry Trofholz. Jurries, the 2002 Conference USA Player of the Year, earned the distinction after hitting .400 with 20 home runs and 30 stolen bases. He also led the team with 77 runs scored, 96 hits, four triples, 74 RBI, 180 total bases, a .750 slugging percentage, a .493 on-base percentage and 43 walks while tallying 16 doubles. He led the team with 30 multiple-hit games and he hit two home runs in five different games. Crain became the first player in C-USA history to be named first team All-Conference at two different positions. At the plate, he batted .310 with 13 doubles, 10 home runs and 47 runs. On the mound, he was 4-0 with a school-record 10 saves, not allowing an earned run all season until Sunday’s Super Regional final, throwing 37 1/3 innings on the year. Crain was the first Conference USA player taken in last week’s Major League Draft, going to the Minnesota Twins in the second round. Trofholz shattered the C-USA record for batting average, hitting .441 on the year, 14 points better than Goefrey Tomlinson’s .427 average in 1997. His batting average was the second-highest in school history and he tied TCU’s single-season record with 94 hits. Trofholz led the Horned Frogs in on-base percentage (.481), total bases (121), runs (51), sacrifice hits (12) and stolen bases (22). He hit safely in 47 games this season. The NCBWA third team squad featured an additional three C-USA standouts: Houston catcher Chris Snyder, Louisville outfielder Mark Jurich and East Carolina freshman sensation Darryl Lawhorn, who earned a spot as a utility player. Snyder followed up his first team All-Conference USA selection by earning his first All-American honors. The former USA Team member led Houston in batting (.343) and RBI (71), while hitting 13 doubles and 15 home runs. He started all 65 games for the Cougars and paced the team in walks (47), while throwing out 17 would-be base stealers. Jurich becomes the first Louisville player since 1992 to earn All-American honors. The standout sophomore spent much of the 2002 campaign batting over .400 before finishing with a .365 average with 15 doubles, 16 home runs and 60 RBI. The 16 home runs were the most by a Cardinal player since 1995 as he helped U of L to its first-ever NCAA Regional appearance. Lawhorn, a first team All-Conference USA selection and the league’s C-USA Freshman of the Year, finished his rookie campaign with a .416 batting average, 19 home runs and 68 RBI, while establishing ECU single season records for hits (104) and total bases (179). He is the first player in school history to collect 100 hits during a season. 2002 NCBWA ALL-AMERICA TEAMS
