NCBWA Honors Six C-USA Standouts As All-Americans

Six Conference USA players were named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) All-American team, the organization announced on Tuesday. East Carolina’s Ryan Jones and Jarrett Hoffpauir and Austin Tubb of Southern Miss were first team selections. USM outfielder Ryan Frith and ECU pitcher Greg Bunn were named to the second team and Tulane OF Matt Barket garnered a spot on the third team.
Jones was named the 2004 Conference USA Player of the Year after hitting .409 heading into the conference tournament and finishing league play hitting .407 in conference. He led the nation in slugging percentage for most of the season, finishing at .823 with 49 of his 86 hits serving as extra-base hits including 26 doubles, four triples and 19 home runs. He posted a team-high 69 RBI and posted 25 multiple hit games and 14 multiple RBI games.
Hoffpauir had one of the finest if not the finest season ever by a Golden Eagle. The first team All-C-USA selection had a team-leading .405 batting average, scored 62 runs, had a school-record 109 hits, tied for the team lead with 27 doubles, hit two triples, 11 home runs, a school-record 92 RBIs, a school-record 12 sacrifice flies and was walked 20 times. In the field, he finished with only six errors for the season in 332 fielding chances (.982) and helped turn 52 double plays. Hoffpauir only struck out eight times for the season, which equates to one strikeout every 38.25 plate appearances. He produced a run every 3.3 plate appearances and committed an error in the field once in every 55.3 chances.
Tubb is Southern Miss' all-time save leader with 20 and is fourth all-time in Conference USA history. A second-team CoSIDA Academic All-American, he finished with an 8-0 record with 10 saves and a 0.93 ERA in 38.2 innings pitched this season. A first-team All-Conference USA performer, he struck out 49, walked seven and opponents hit .215 against him. He was second in Conference USA in saves and tied for eighth in victories. Last season as a junior, he was 3-2 with 10 saves and a 1.45 ERA in 31 innings pitched. He struck out 30, walked nine and opponents hit.196 against him.
Bunn was named the 2004 Conference USA Pitcher of the Year. The converted closer from the 2003 season started 17 games for the Pirates. Opponents hit a league-low .191 against him and registered a conference-best 117 strikeouts in 105.2 innings of work. He closed the year with a 10-1 record and earned wins in five of ECU's nine shutouts on the season.
Frith hit .341 for the year with 85 hits, 15 doubles, 22 home runs, scored 59 runs and drove in 63 runs. He finished with 166 total bases for a .667 slugging percentage and had a .419 on-base percentage. He finished with 111 putouts, six assists and had a fielding percentage of .967. Frith had 22 multiple-hit games and 16 multiple-RBI games. He also was a first-team All-Conference USA performer and was named to the Conference USA All-Tournament team.
Barket had a brilliant first season in a Tulane uniform. The transfer from Miami (Fla.) led the team in hitting at .370, registering 88 hit s and a team-best .450 on-base percentage. Barket smacked 17 doubles, hit seven home runs and drove in 41 runs. He ranked second on the team in runs scored with 52 and swiped a team-high 13 bases.
