Three Conference USA players were named to the Baseball America All-American teams, the publication announced on Thursday. TCU junior righthander Lance Broadway was named to the first team, while Tulane teammates Brian Bogusevic and Micah Owings were named to the third team.
Broadway, the C-USA Pitcher of the Year and one of four finalists for the Xanthus-Dick Howser Trophy, established school and conference records for victories with a nation-leading 15. The Grand Prairie, Texas native was 15-1 with a 1.62 ERA and struck out 151 batters with just 35 walks in 117 innings pitched. In C-USA play, he was 9-0 with a 1.66 ERA in 10 starts. The All-America honor is the fourth of the season for Broadway.
The TCU ace strung together a pair of impressive streaks without allowing an earned run this season. The first lasted 36.2 innings and spanned seven appearances (six starts, one relief appearance) during which he struck out 52, walked six and allowed just 28 hits. The second streak lasted 25.2 innings and spanned four starts. He struck out 32, walked five and allowed 13 hits before yielding a run. Broadway closed out his season by allowing only two earned runs over his last 43.2 innings pitched, while helping TCU set a new school record for victories in a season (41).
Bogusevic leads the top-ranked Green Wave in ERA (3.14), wins (12) and innings pitched (123.1), ranking second in strikeouts (123) and holding opponents to a .254 batting average. The Oak Lawn, Ill., native was named to the Conference USA All-Tournament team and has posted the second-highest single-season victory total in league history entering the College World Series. A two-way performer, Bogusevic was named to the All-America team as a pitcher, but also contributed at the plate batting .328 with eight doubles and 22 RBI in 116 at-bats.
Owings, another Tulane two-way standout, garnered the utility spot on the third team after posting impressive numbers in both areas of the game. The Gainesville, Ga., native hit at a .354 clip with a C-USA leading 18 home runs and 64 RBI, while recording an 11-4 record with a 3.38 ERA and team-leading 131 strikeouts on the mound. Owings was named the C-USA Player of the Year after transferring from Georgia Tech. The junior also earned New Orleans Regional MVP honors and tossed a complete-game shutout in game two of the Green Wave’s Super Regional victory over Rice.
