C-USA Sends Two Teams to NCAA Baseball Championship
CHICAGO - Conference USA will be sending a pair of teams to the
2000 NCAA Baseball Championship, as announced by the Division I baseball
committee this afternoon. Houston and Tulane will be C-USA's
representatives in postseason regionals that will be held between May 26-28.
It is the fifth straight year that Conference USA has sent multiple teams to
the NCAAs.
Houston earned its second consecutive bid and will host a
subregional as the No.1 seed. The Cougars, who became just the second C-USA
team to win both the regular season and tournament championship, are the No.
5 overall seed in the 64-team field. Number six-ranked UH (44-15) will be
the No. 1 seed in its region and face Ivy League Champion Princeton (24-18)
in the first game. Houston will face either No. 2 seed Rice (40-21),
champions of the Western Athletic Conference, or No. 3 seed Texas Tech
(35-24), an at-large selection from the Big 12, in the next round.
Tulane, which finished second in Conference USA during the regular
season, will travel to Starkville, Miss. for the subregionals. The Green
Wave (37-20-1) will be making their third straight NCAA appearance and were
selected as a No. 3 seed. Tulane will face No. 3 seed Notre Dame (43-16) in
the first round. The No. 1 seed and host of the regional, Mississippi State
(38-17), will play No. 4 seed South Alabama (27-31) in the other first-round
game.
All three regionals will take place from Friday-Sunday, May 26-28.
Winners will advance to two-team super-regionals at sites to be determined
on June 2-4. The 51st College World Series will take place June 9-17 at
Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Neb.
