The Blazers finished the season at 28-32, which is an increase of six wins from 1999. UAB opened the Conference USA Tournament by posting a win over No. 24 Tulane, the team's second straight won over the Green Wave after 14 straight losses to TU over a five-year period. Senior DH BRENT LAIRCEY finished with the team lead in doubles (11) and home runs (15) and was also named a GTE District IV Academic All-American. Senior OF WILL SMITH stole six bases at the C-USA Tournament to finish his career as the school and conference's single-season (55) and career (91) stolen base leader. With 164 steals as a team, the Blazers set a new C-USA record for team steals. Freshman OF MITCH JONES was 27-for-33 in stolen bases attempts on the year, batting .333 and had nine home runs to go along with 40 RBI. With 82 combined steals, Jones and Smith are the most prolific single-season base stealing duo in school history. Junior 3B KEITH BARNES set new school and conference records for sacrifices in a season with 17 (15 sacrifice hits, 2 sacrifice flies).
