Chad Sutter Joins Tulane Baseball Coaching Staff

NEW ORLEANS (July 5) - Tulane head baseball coach Rick Jones announced Friday, June 30, that Chad Sutter has joined his coaching staff as a volunteer assistant coach.

As the volunteer assistant, Sutter's responsibilities include acting as the team's first base coach, coaching the catchers, and serving as the assistant hitting coach. He returns to Tulane after spending one season with the New York Yankees' Staten Island affiliate.

"Anytime you have a former player serving in a coaching role, that's a real positive for your program," said Jones. "Chad brings so much knowledge and a tremendous feel for the game to our staff. He is a quality addition."

A Green Wave baseball letterman from 1996-99, Sutter finished his career as one of the most prolific hitters in school history. In 244 games played, Sutter hit .342 with 75 home runs and 280 runs batted in. As a senior in 1999, Sutter batted .393 with 23 home runs and 87 RBI. For his efforts, he was named the Conference USA Player of the Year and All-America by Louisville Slugger, USA Today Baseball Weekly and College Baseball Insider. He is Tulane's career leader in home runs, RBI and games played.

"I'm very excited about this opportunity," said Sutter. "Coaching is something that I've always wanted to do, and I can think of no better place to start than at my alma mater for one of the finest coaches in the country."

A proven winner, Sutter was a three-time all-Conference USA selection and the C-USA Freshman of the Year in 1996. He finished his career ranked in the top 10 in nine statistical categories and is the only player in C-USA history to earn both Freshman of the Year and Player of the Year awards. All told, he helped the Green Wave to four 40-win seasons, three NCAA Tournament appearances, three Conference USA Tournament championships and two C-USA regular season titles.

Sutter will earn his degree in social science this summer and begin graduate school in the fall.
