ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis University baseball player Corey Lawson (Imperial, Mo./Windsor) earned one of 29 postgraduate scholarships awarded by the NCAA to male student-athletes who excel academically and athletically in their last year of eligibility in a spring sport. Overall the NCAA awards 174 scholarships, 87 for men and 87 for women, divided equally among fall sports, winter sports and spring sports. Lawson was the only Conference USA student-athlete selected and was one of five baseball players on the list.
Graduating from the University with a communication degree in May, the outfielder/pitcher will pursue a master's degree in sport administration at West Virginia University. Lawson led the Billikens with a .317 batting average, 39 RBI, eight home runs and 14 doubles last season. On the mound, he led the starting rotation with a 5.17 ERA in 87 innings. In just two seasons as a Billiken, Lawson set the Conference USA record and ranks fourth in school history with 14 complete games. His career 3.99 ERA also ranks fourth all-time in Billiken history.
To earn the one-time grant of $6,900 a student-athlete must be in his or her final year of eligibility, have performed with distinction as a member of a varsity team, have a minimum GPA of 3.2, be nominated by the faculty athletic representative or athletics director and intend to continue academic work beyond the baccalaureate degree as a part-time or full-time graduate student. Candidates are screened by seven regional selection committees, and winners are selected by the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Committee three times each academic year.
