UC's Logan Wins Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award

University of Cincinnati senior Steve Logan has been named the winner of the 34th Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award, honoring the nation’s outstanding senior male collegian six-feet or under.
The award is presented annually by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, located in Springfield, Massachusetts, the birthplace of basketball.
Logan, the Bearcats' a 6-foot guard. was a consensus first team All-America choice this season, earning honors from the Associated Press, National Association of Basketball Coaches, U.S. Basketball Writers Association, The Sporting News and Basketball Basketball America and Basketball Times.
Logan, who was named the Conference USA Player of the Year for the second straight season, finished his illustrious career with 1,985 points, second in school history to Basketball Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson. A finalist for the Naismith, John Wooden and Oscar Robertson national Player of the Year awards, Logan remained at Cincinnati all four seasons and in the process set school records for victories (111) and games played (135). That achievement led him to be a finalist for the inaugural Senior CLASS award, initiated this year by sportscaster Dick Enberg to honor the top senior player in the country.
Logan, whose 22 ppg was among the nation’s top 14 scorers in 2001-2002, boasted a streak of 52 games where he scored in double figures. Logan’s propencity for scoring was often overshadowed by his playmaking and passing skills. His 456 career assists ranks second in UC history behind Robertson and his 16 assists against Coppin Stateon December 8, 2001 created a new Bearcat single game record. He averaged 5.3 assists per game this season.
The Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award, named in honor of James Naismith’s daughter-in-law, was selected by a panel of representatives from the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). To earn the award, the recipient must demonstrate leadership, character, loyalty and all-around basketball ability.
