Quincy Davis Earns Invite to Portsmouth Invitational
April 5, 2006 NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tulane men's basketball standout Quincy Davis has been selected to compete in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, a four-day postseason event which begins on Thursday in Portsmouth, Va. "I am hoping to get exposure and to get my name out there," Davis said. "It is really exciting for me to have this opportunity. I am hoping to do well and get the opportunity to continue my basketball career, whether it's in the U.S. or in Europe." In its 55th year of existence, the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament includes 64 college seniors broken up into eight teams of eight players each. They play 11 games over the four-day period with approximately 200 NBA representatives, as well as many international scouts, in attendance. "This is a great honor for Quincy," Tulane head coach Dave Dickerson said. "And he has earned it through all of his hard work. But it is also a great honor for our program. These are the type of things we are looking for our players to achieve as we continue to build the program here at Tulane." Davis was named to the Conference USA all-league third team after averaging 13.1 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. He is just the sixth Tulane player to earn all-league recognition in the 11 years of Conference USA. He joins Waitari Marsh (2003), Brandon Brown (2002), Ledaryl Billingsley (2001), Jerald Honeycutt (1996, 1997) and Rayshard Allen (1996, 1997). Despite one of the most trying seasons for any senior in the country, Davis put the Green Wave on his back in Conference USA play, lifting his team into a tie for sixth place in Conference USA. In league games only, Davis averaged 14.4 points (eighth in the league), 6.9 rebounds (sixth) and 1.4 blocks (fifth) while leading the league by shooting 58.7 percent from the field. Davis scored in double figures in all but three league games this year. He has a 25-point performance against SMU, 20 against East Carolina and Southern Miss, 19 against Memphis and a 20-point, 10-rebound effort on the road at UAB. He is just the 14th player in Tulane history to record 1,000 points and 500 rebounds and currently has 1,073 points and 545 rebounds to go with 163 career blocks. His career field-goal percentage of .578 is currently No. 1 in the Tulane record books and fifth in C-USA history. The Portsmouth Invitational has sent many players on to the NBA including Scottie Pippen, Ben Wallace, Antonio Davis, Avery Johnson, Cuttino Mobley and P.J. Brown. Other prominent names included on this year's rosters are Carl Krauser (Pittsburgh), Eric Hicks (Cincinnati), Chris Quinn (Notre Dame), Curtis Withers (Charlotte), Jeff Horner (Iowa), Sean Dockery (Duke), Darrel Mitchell (LSU), Steve Novak (Marquette) and David Noel (North Carolina).
