Calipari Family Donates $100,000 To Help Endow Athletic Scholarships At Memphis

John Calipari

The Memphis Athletic Department announced Thursday that men’s basketball head coach John Calipari and his family have made a magnanimous contribution of $100,000 to help endow athletic scholarships at the University of Memphis.

“John and his family continue to generously give back to the University of Memphis and this community,” said Director of Athletics R.C. Johnson. “We have always been proud of what John has accomplished on the basketball court and are equally as proud of what he does off the court.

"This donation will go a long way in helping ensure the future educational needs of student-athletes at the University.”

The family’s contribution will be used to help endow scholarships for current and future student-athletes. The funds also could be used by student-athletes that take a fifth year or return later to school to complete their degrees.

Calipari and his family hope this contribution will help “jump-start” a movement by Tiger supporters and friends of the University to donate and create more athletic scholarship endowments.

“With the budget cuts the state is facing –especially in the area of higher education – it is important that we begin endowing athletic scholarships in order that outstanding and talented students can continue their educational pursuits at the University of Memphis,” said Calipari.

“My family and I feel strongly about this, and hope that others here in the Memphis community and Tiger alumni and friends of the University everywhere will follow in supporting this worthwhile endeavor.”
