ECU Men's Basketball Signs Derrick Wiley
GREENVILLE, N.C. - Derrick Wiley, a 6-4, 195-pound wing forward, who played last season at Moberly Community College, has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball at East Carolina next season, Pirate head coach Bill Herrion announced today.
A native of Durham, Wiley played one season at Montgomery County Community College (Md.), before transferring to Pratt Junior College (Kan.), where he sat out the second semester and decided to leave following a coaching change. He averaged 31 points per game as a freshman at Montgomery Community College and averaged 20.1 points and six reboundsper game last year at Moberly. He finished second in Region XVI in scoring and eighth in rebounding, earning All-Region XVI honors.
Wiley helped Moberly capture the Region XVI Tournament title and advance the NJCAA Tournament, where he earned all-tournament accolades averaging 27.3 points per contest in four games.
"We're very happy to get Derrick Wiley," Herrion said. "He's a 6-4 kid that can score a lot of different ways. The thing that I really like about Derrick is his toughness. He comes from one of the most successful junior college programs in the country, where he was very well coached."
He attended high school at Mt. Zion Academy in Durham, where he was a teammate of NBA All-Star Tracy McGrady.
Wiley is the fourth and final signee in this year's recruiting class. He joins Corey Rouse (6-8, Kinston, N.C.), Belton Rivers (6-3, Atlanta, Ga.) and Luke Mackay (6-4, Perth, Australia).
