Former Houston Coach Guy Lewis Recovering From Stroke

Houston, Texas- After suffering a severe stroke on his right side in late February, former University of Houston basketball coach Guy V. Lewis is on the road to recovery.

Lewis was released from Methodist Hospital on Friday, April 26, after
undergoing two months of in-patient physical therapy.

"Guy is doing well and looking forward to a full recovery," Lewis' wife, Dena, said. "He is very motivated to make a full recovery.
"In fact, one of his rehabilitation nurses remarked 'That she wished all of her patients were as motivated as Guy'."

Lewis is still undergoing some additional outpatient physical therapy for the next four weeks.

"I am looking forward to attending some football and basketball games next year," Lewis said. "I want to thank the fans for their overwhelming support. "

Lewis spent 30 seasons as the head coach at the University of Houston from 1956-86 and compiled a 592-279 career record. He also led the Cougars to five NCAA Final Fours, 14 NCAA Tournaments and three NIT berths. He also led the Cougars to three Southwest Conference regular season championships and four SWC Postseason Classic titles from 1976-86.

A native of Arp, Texas, Lewis produced 11 first round NBA Draft selections and 29 overall NBA picks. Three of his former players (Elvin Hayes, Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler) went on to score 20,000 points in their NBA careers. No other school has more than one player.

Lewis also joined Dean Smith as the only two coaches to produce three of the NBA's all-time Top 50 players.

Following his retirement, Lewis has been one of UH's most loyal supporters as he attended every home game before missing the UAB game after his stroke at the end of the 2001-02 season.
