SNELL NAMED TULANE MEN'S BASKETBALL ASSISTANT COACH

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tulane University has hired Steve Snell as its newest assistant men's basketball coach, head coach Shawn Finney has announced.

A native of Radford, Va., Snell has served as an assistant coach at Marshall University for the past five seasons under coach Greg White. Since arriving at Marshall prior to the 1996-97 season, Snell helped the Herd to an 86-54 (.614) record. In that time, Snell played a vital role in recruiting such standout players as Tamar Slay, J.R. VanHoose, Travis Young, Joda Burgess and Cornelius Jackson. The Herd's 1998 recruiting class was ranked by ESPN as the best in the Mid-American Conference.

"I am very excited to get Steve on the job here at Tulane," Finney said. "He is a proven recruiter who will bring a lot to our program. His knowledge of the game will be an asset to our players in their development on the court as well."

Prior to his move to Marshall, Snell spent three years as an assistant coach at East Tennessee State University. He served the 1992-93 campaign at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. He also spent two years at Wingate College and one season at Radford University. Before that, Snell coached basketball at Radford High School during the 1989-90 campaign.

"I am happy to be here at Tulane with such a young, energetic staff," Snell said. "It's a privilege to work for an up-and-coming coach who has been part of a national championship. I am looking for nothing but great things here at Tulane."

Snell earned a B.S. degree in recreation and leisure studies from Radford University in 1988. He is married to the former Ann Barnitz.
