Marquette Basketball Player Scott Merritt Undergoes Successful Shoulder Surgery

Scott Merritt

Marquette University basketball player Scott Merritt, a three-year letterwinner and starter in all 33 games during the 2002-03 campaign, has undergone arthroscopic shoulder surgery.

"Earlier today, Scott Merritt underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder to address a shoulder instability," said Marquette Head Basketball Coach Tom Crean. "The surgery took approximately two hours and was determined by Drs. Jim Langenkamp and Rory Wright to be a very effective procedure."

This past year, the 6-foot-10 Merritt ranked second on the squad in rebounding (6.6 rpg) and fourth in scoring (10.1 ppg). He posted double-figure scoring in 17 games and compiled five double doubles in helping the team to a 27-6 overall record.

"The procedure today was not a result of a re-occurrence from a previous injury," added Crean. "The initial repair was arthroscopically
checked and found to be intact. Scott will be immobilized for six weeks with full contact anticipated to take place approximately 12 weeks after the surgery.

"All in all, we anticipate Scott being ready for the start of practice," Crean said. "In the meantime, he will continue to take classes
along with his teammates and also serve as a counselor at the prestigious NIKE Camp, July 5-11."
