RECAP
MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Tony Harris scored 14 points as
12th-ranked Tennessee remained unbeaten with a 74-69 victory
over intrastate rival Memphis.
Vincent Yarbrough and Ron Slay added 14 points apiece for the
Volunteers (9-0), who are off to the fifth-best start in team
history. They extended their winning streak by overcoming a
seven-point halftime deficit and playing well down the stretch.
"I thought that they (Memphis) were really ready to play," said
Tennessee coach Jerry Green. "A lot of people stepped up for us
in different roles tonight than we are accustomed to."
Tennessee, which trailed 37-30 at the break, holds a 9-4 lead in
the all-time series between the schools.
Marcus Moody scored 17 points and Keiron Shine contributed 16
for the Tigers (4-6), who have dropped four straight following a
four-game winning streak.
"I thought our team played extremely hard tonight," Memphis
interim coach Johnny Jones said. "I thought they worked as hard
as they could possibly work on both ends of the floor. They
carried out the things that we asked them to do."
Memphis led by as many as 10 points early in the second half but
the Volunteers used a quick 9-2 run to get back into the contest
and Slay's dunk with 4:24 forced a 61-61 deadlock, the fourth
tie of the night.
Harris put Tennessee on top with a free throw, but Memphis
regained the lead on Shamel Jones' short jumper. Tennessee's
Charles Hathaway scored on a tip-in but Moody went 2-of-2 from
the line to put the Tigers back on top.
Following a timeout, Harris was fouled by Courtney Trask and
made both free throws to give the Vols the lead for good. Slay
followed with a layup and Harris' two foul shots with 1:25 left
made it a five-point game.
Trask sank a turnaround jumper to cut the deficit to 70-67, but
the Tigers could get no closer as Moody threw up an airball.
Harris went 4-of-4 from the line in the final 12 seconds to seal
the victory.
Isiah Victor and Terrence Woods netted 11 points apiece and
Yarbrough grabbed nine rebounds for Tennessee, which shot 41
percent (24-of-58), including 7-of-22 from beyond the arc, and
went 19-of-24 from the foul line.
Tennessee committed 22 turnovers but forced Memphis into 16
miscues and had seven steals.
Jones scored 11 points for the Tigers, who connected on just 35
percent (22-of-63) of their shots and held a 39-38 advantage on
the boards. Shannon Forman grabbed 13 rebounds for Memphis.
"Last night I had a big team meeting, just the players and
myself," Johnny Jones said. "We talked about the opportunity to
give everything you've got on the floor every minute that you
are out there."
