Lowe Resigns UAB position To Take Job At Smiths Station High School

UAB assistant football coach Woodrow Lowe is stepping down from his position with the Blazers to accept the job of head coach and athletic director at Smiths Station High School in Smith, Ala.

Lowe joined the staff at UAB in February, 2001 after spending six seasons as a defensive assistant in the National Football League, first for the Kansas City Chiefs (1995-98) and then with the Oakland Raiders (1999-00).

During his stint at UAB, Lowe has coached the Blazers on both sides of the ball. Most recently, he served as UAB's special teams coordinator and tight ends coach.

"Woody brought a lot of class to our program and has been a great asset to us," said UAB head coach and athletic director Watson Brown. "We are excited for him to have this opportunity and wish him a lot of success."

In taking the position at Smiths Station, Lowe will be returning to an area not far from his roots as he attended high school at Central High in Phenix City, Ala. He later coached at Central, leading the football program to a state championship in 1992.

"This (working at UAB) has been a great experience for me," said Lowe, "and I am very appreciative to Coach Brown and the UAB family for having me. The UAB program arrived at a milestone (playing in a bowl game) last year that we had been trying to reach. Now that the program has achieved that, I believe only good things are ahead. I wish UAB nothing but good fortune."

Lowe earned All-America honors three consecutive years as a collegiate player at Alabama, and was captain of the Crimson Tide's 1973 national championship team. Following his career at Alabama, Lowe spent 11 seasons in the NFL as a linebacker with the San Diego Chargers.

Brown said that with spring recruiting on the horizon, he will move to fill the vacancy on his coaching staff as soon as possible.
