Tulsa Takes NCAA Central Regional Championship

Sugar Grove, Ill. - The 17th-ranked Tulsa men's golf team will head into the NCAA Championships on May 30-June 2 with plenty of momentum after posting a three-round total of 895 to hold on for the NCAA Central Regional Championship on Saturday afternoon at the par-72 Rich Harvest Farms Golf Course in Sugar Grove, Ill. After mounting a seven-stroke lead over Louisville at the end of day two, TU carded a 310 on the final day to hold off a charging, third-ranked, Alabama team which finished second with a three round total of 898. Rounding out the top-five were No. 23 Louisville (899), No. 7 Lamar (900) and No. 14 Tennessee (904). The top ten teams from the regional will advance to the NCAA Championships. Those will include, in addition to the already listed top-five, No. 41 Texas Tech (906), No. 5 Oklahoma State (906), No. 31 Michigan State (915), No. 27 Texas (916) and No. 32 Minnesota (918). The Gophers took the final spot after winning the first playoff hole against No. 12 Texas A&M. Sophomore Nicolas Geyger stormed back into contention with a one-over 73 on the final day to jump from a tie for 23rd to a tie for ninth with a seven-over par total of 223. Also in a tie for ninth was Senior Ryan Henry, who finished the tournament with a six-over par 78, for an overall 223 on the tourney. Geyger posted Tulsa's best round on the final day, with birdies on holes four, 15 and 16 that were offset by bogeys on holes 3, 5, 6 and 10. Senior Sam Korbe, ranked No. 96 in the nation, carded a five-over 77 to finish the tournament with a nine-over total of 225 which put him in a tie for 17th. Senior Brett Myers, the No. 98 ranked player in the country, fell on hard luck in the final round, turning in a 10-over par 82 to finish with a 54-hole total of 227 (+11) to finish in a tie for 29th after starting the day in a tie for fifth place.
Senior Mitch Cohlmia also found the course more difficult on day three, carding a 13-over 85 on the final day for a three-day total of 235 (+19) to drop him from a tie for 25th to a tie for 72nd. Lamar's Dawie Van Der Walt finished in a first place tie with Louisville's Dan Holtman, each finishing with a 54-hole total of 215 to finish one-under par for the tournament.
