Williamsburg, Virginia - The Tulsa men's golf team carded a four-under par 284 and sits in a tie for 12th place after first round competition at the NCAA Championships on Wednesday.

The nation's second-ranked Stanford Cardinal leads the field by three strokes after turning in an opening round five-under par 275 at the par-70 Golden Horseshoe Gold Course. After the Cardinal, only six strokes separates the next 14 teams. Florida, Minnesota Coastal Carolina and Texas are tied for second place with two-under par scores of 278, while Charlotte is the only other under-par team with a one-under par 279 score for sixth place.

Rounding out the top-10 teams are East Tennessee State (280) in seventh place, No.1 ranked Georgia (282) in eighth place, while Michigan State, UCLA and Florida State (283) are tied for ninth place. Tulsa is one stroke back in a four-way tie at 12th place with Alabama, Tennessee and Vanderbilt.

Tulsa senior Ryan Henry turned in the best round for the Hurricane with a one-under par 69 for 15th place. Henry had three birdies and two bogeys on the day as the Hurricane began the round on the 10th hole. Fellow senior Brett Myers regrouped after a rocky start and turned in a one-over par round of 72 and sits in 51st place.

After his first five holes, Myers was five-over par with two double bogeys and one bogey. He then regrouped for birdies on holes 15 and 16, his sixth and seventh holes of the day, and shot two-under par for his final nine holes.

Fellow seniors Sam Korbe and Mitch Cohlmia turned in rounds of two-over par 72 and are tied for 66th place. Korbe and Cohlmia each birdied three holes on the day.

 

 

Sophomore Nicolas Geyger suffered through bogey-par-double bogey-bogey-par and triple bogey to go six-over par after the first six holes. He regrouped on the backside with two birdies and seven pars to finish with a four-over par 74 for 107th place.

Individually, Stanford's Rob Grube turned in a six-under par 64 to take the lead after first round play.

The second round will commence on Thursday morning while after Friday's round the top-15 teams will make the cut for the final round on Saturday.
