UTEP freshman Herbert Day shot a 67 at Painted Dunes Golf Course in El Paso on Tuesday to advance to the second stage of sectional qualifying for the 2008 U.S. Open.

There are two stages to qualify for the tournament, which will be held June 9-15 at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego. The next stage will take place at Shadow Hawk Golf Club in Richmond, Texas on June 2.

A native of San Salvador, El Salvador, Day was a member of the Conference USA All-Freshman Team this season. He led the Miners with a 73.5 stroke average, finishing in the top 10 at three tournaments including tying for second place at the John Burns Intercollegiate in Honolulu.
