Oct. 1 C-USA Golf Notebook
IRVING, Texas- The Tulsa women are ranked No. 4 in the latest Golfweek rankings released Sept. 28. The Golden Hurricane hold the highest ranking of any C-USA golf team. Joining Tulsa on the women's side in the Top 100 rankings are UCF (No. 42), Tulane (No. 46) and East Carolina (No. 76). The TU men also lead their respective national rankings, appearing at No. 34, followed by UAB (No. 44), UCF (No. 56) and Memphis (No. 84).
SMU senior Kate Ackerson and freshman Jack Belote of Memphis were named Conference USA Golfers of the Week for the period ending Sept. 30. Ackerson led the Mustangs to an 11th place finish at the Badger Invitational in Madison, Wis., after shooting a three round total 220 (71-75-74). In his collegiate debut, Belote was the Tigers top finisher at the Mason Rudolph Invitational ending the three-day tournament in a four-way tie for 17th place.
WOMEN'S GOLFER OF THE WEEK
Kate Ackerson, SMU
Sr., Allen, Texas (Allen)
Ackerson carded a final-round 74 and finished tied for fifth at the Badger Invitational at University Ridge Golf Course. Ackerson's three-round total of 220 (71-75-74) was just five shots back from the top finisher. The senior's performance notched her second-straight top five finish after tying for fourth place at the Wolverine Invitational earlier this season. This is Ackerson's fourth career honor.
MEN'S GOLFER OF THE WEEK
Jack Belote, Memphis
Fr., Bartlett, Tenn. (Bolton)
Belote fired a three-day total 215 (76-68-71) to jump nine slots in the ranks and finish in a four-way tie for 17th place at the Mason Rudolph Invite. Competing in his first collegiate competition, Belote led the Tigers to a seventh-place finish in the 17 team field which included six of the nation's top 100 teams, including No. 8 South Carolina.
OTHER NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
HAROLD VARNER - EAST CAROLINA
Securing top finishes in both of the Pirates' first two tournaments, Varner carded a one-under 215 (72-72-71) at the VCU Shootout and earned a 27th place individual finish. The freshman led the Pirates to an 11th place team finish in an event that included four teams ranked among the nation's top 50.
CHRISTIAN BRAND - MARSHALL
Brand was the lone MU golfer to post a round at par, doing so in the second round with a 72 at the Cardinal Intercollegiate in Louisville, Ky. The junior fired a 221 (73-72-76) to finish in a four-way tie for 40th place.
HERBERT DAY - UTEP
Day shot a six-over-par 222 (73-72-77) to finish in a two-way tie for 24th at the William H. Tucker Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. The sophomore led the Miners to a 12th place finish ahead of in-state rivals Texas State and Texas-San Antonio.
MARIKA LENDL - UCF
Lendl was UCF's top finisher at the Mason Rudolph Women's Challenge jumping more than 10 places to finish in a six-way tie for 39th place. In the freshman's debut, she scored a 224 (82-70-72) leading the Knights to a 17th place finish in a field which hosted 14 teams in Golfweek's top 50.
