C-USA Golf Notebook
IRVING, Texas - The SMU women will hit the links first this weekend as seven Conference USA golf teams will be in action during the final tournaments of the fall season. Also joining the Mustangs on the women’s side of competition will be UAB, Marshall and Southern Miss who all compete in the UAB Fall Beach Blast. Rounding out the women’s fall schedule is the Golden Hurricane of Tulsa who will take part in the College Match Play Invitational.
On the men’s side, Rice will play in the Golden State Invitational and UCF will travel north to the WCU Intercollegiate in North Carolina.
All other C-USA teams have concluded the fall season and will resume play in February 2009.
SMU’s James Kwon and Abby Bools of East Carolina are this week’s Golfers of the Week. Kwon captured individual medalist honors at the Baylor Intercollegiate after firing a one-under-par 212 (74-69-69) in the two-day tournament. On the women’s side, Bools earns her second consecutive weekly honor after recording her 14th career Top 10 finish at the Landfall Tradition. The junior posted a three-round total of 220 (78-74-68) to finish in second-place.
MEN’S GOLFER OF THE WEEK
JAMES KWON – SMU
Fr., Houston, Texas (Stratford)
Kwon earned medalist honors at the Baylor Intercollegiate Tuesday after firing a one-under-par 212 (74-69-69). Kwon came back from a first round three-over 74 to fire back-to-back rounds of two-under 69 to win the event by one stroke. The freshman’s efforts helped the Mustangs to a Top 10 finish, placing seventh in a field that hosted six of the nation’s Top 100 teams. This is Kwon’s first weekly honor of the season.
WOMEN’S GOLFER OF THE WEEK
ABBY BOOLS – EAST CAROLINA
Jr., Hickory, N.C. (Hickory)
Bools earns her second consecutive weekly honor after recording her 14th career Top 10 finish at the Landfall Tradition. The junior posted a 54-hole score of 220 (78-74-68) to finish in second-place. Her efforts helped the Pirates to a sixth-place team finish and along the way the team notched wins over No. 24 Notre Dame and No. 31 N.C. State. The weekly award is the second for Bools in 2008-09 (Oct. 22) and her fifth career weekly honor.
OTHER NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
DEREK PLUCIENSKI - SOUTHERN MISS
Plucienski finished tied for 11th in the Sam Hall Intercollegiate after recording a three-round score of 220 (74-73-73) and leading the Golden Eagles to a sixth-place finish.
NICOLAS GEYER - TULSA
Geyer was the top finisher for the Golden Hurricane at the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C. The senior finished fourth in the three-day tournament, carding a 220 (74-73-73) and helping the Golden Hurricane to a second-place finish as a team.
ZACK SUCHER - UAB
Sucher closed play tied for second-place at the Bank of Tennesee Intercollegiate and helped the Blazers to a ninth-place finish as a team. The senior finished with a one-under-par 215 (71-72-72) to record his 12th round at or below par this season.
ROGER SLOAN - UTEP
Sloan tied for 17th-place at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate after scoring a 216 (74-71-71) and was the Miners’ top finisher for the fifth time this season.
MARISSA STEEN - MEMPHIS
Steen carded a three-day 235 (78-77-80) at the Rollins College Tournament in Southern Pines, N.C. The freshman golfer led the Tigers to a seventh-place finish at the 6,114 yard course.
JANINE FELLOWS - TULANE
Fellows notched a 21st-place finish after firing a 227 (75-76-76). She helped the Green Wave to an eighth-place tie at the Derby Invitational in Auburn, Ala.
