2000 C-USA MEN'S SOCCER AWARDS
Saint Louis sophomore forward Jack Jewsbury was named Conference USA's Player of the Year, while Memphis head coach Richie Grant earned the conference's Coach of the Year award. SLU's Brad Davis took home Freshman of the Year honors, and UAB senior goalkeeper David Clemente was named Defensive Player of the Year. The selections were made by C-USA's nine head coaches.
Jewsbury ranks among Conference USA's top 10 in shots (eighth with 49), goals (third with 13) and points (tied for fourth with 31). Twice this season he was named to all-tournament teams and he took home C-USA Offensive Player of the Week honors on Nov. 5 after his hat trick at South Florida helped the Billikens to the regular season conference championship. Jewsbury is also a candidate for the Missouri Athletic Club (MAC) National Player of the Year award.
Grant was named Coach of the Year after leading the Tigers to a school record-tying 14 wins. In his second season at the helm of Memphis, Grant led the Tigers to a 5-3 conference finish (with all three losses coming in overtime) and a 14-6-0 overall mark, which ties for the most wins in Conference USA this season.
Clemente was chosen as the league's Defensive Player of the Year after recording a 0.98 goals against average in 21 matches, second-lowest in C-USA. He has recorded five shutouts this season to give him 27 for his career, second on the Blazers all-time charts. Clemente is UAB's all-time leader in goals against average at 1.17.
Davis adds Conference USA Freshman of the Year to his impressive list of honors during the 2000 season. The MVP of the Rutgers/adidas Tournament and a Soccer America Team of the Week selection (Oct. 8), Davis was also named as the Most Valuable Forward at the C-USA Tournament and joins teammate Jack
Jewsbury as a MAC Player of the Year candidate. Davis led all C-USA Freshmen and ranks second on the Billikens in scoring with 28 points (11 goals, six assists).
Saint Louis had the most first team selections with three, while Cincinnati, Louisville and UAB had two each. The regular season and tournament champion Billikens also led in the most overall all-conference selections with seven, followed by Charlotte with six.
