Four C-USA Men's Soccer Players Earn All-America Accolades

Vedad Ibisevic
  • Entire Release (pdf.)

Vedad Ibisevic of Saint Louis, the 2003 Conference USA Freshman of the Year, along with fellow First Team All-Conference selections, Adrian Cann of Louisville and Leandro de Oliveria and Tony McManus of UAB, were named to the Soccer Times All-America teams on Monday. Ibisevic was named the publication’s National Freshman of the Year and was the only newcomer to earn first team recognition. Cann and de Oliveria earned second team accolades. McManus was tabbed for the third team.

Ibisevic, who was also tabbed as an All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Assocation of America, finished the year with 40 points and 18 goals, both freshmen records at SLU. In the Conference USA Tournament last November in Memphis, Ibisevic caught fire, scoring six goals and providing one assist in two matches, to lead the Billikens to the tournament crown.

Cann, a defender, became the first player in U of L history to be drafted when he was taken with 16th overall selection by Major League Soccer’s Colorado Rapids. He was tabbed as a second team All-American by College Soccer News, becoming the first player in school history to garner that status and for the third consecutive year, he was named as second team All-Great Lakes Region. Cann finishes his Cardinal career as the only Louisville player to earn four All-Conference USA first team honors.

This is second All-America honor bestowed on de Oliveria during the postseason. Earlier, he was tabbed as an NSCAA Second Team All-American after finishing the season as UAB’s second leading scorer with five goals and 18 points, and led the squad with eight assists on the campaign. De Oliveira was one of three players to start all 20 games for UAB.

McManus, a defender, was chosen by the Chicago Fire with the ninth selection of the sixth round. A two-time defensive Player of the Week award winner last season, McManus shared the league’s Defensive Player of the Year award with Cann. He was an integral part of helping the Blazer defense register eight shutouts. It is his second third-team All-America selection, also garnering that same honor from the NSCAA.
