MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Battling in wet and sloppy weather, the University of Memphis men's soccer team defeated Portmarnuck FC, 2-0, in a spring exhibition at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex on Wednesday night.
Traveling all the way from Ireland, Portmarnuck is one of its nation's top amateur teams and has no age limit. Memphis is the only American college team to play the club during its visit to the United States.
The Tigers scored their first goal in the 28th minute on a shot by sophomore Jared Britcher. The Knoxville, Tenn., native drew the goalie out of the box and then maneuvered past him on the right side to score the game winner. Sophomore Adam Montgomery added a second goal for Memphis in the 86th minute after the goalie slipped on the wet field and left the goal unattended.
Strong defense helped the Tigers earn the shutout as junior transfer defender Jamie Gilbert was named the Man of the Match for Memphis. Sophomore goalie Tyler Strom picked up six saves in the game with four coming in the second half. Portmarnuck out shot the Tigers 15-9 in the game.
"I'm very pleased with the way our guys performed today," said Memphis head coach Richie Grant. "They performed well against a good team. Jaime (Gilbert) had a solid game in the defense playing all 90 minutes."
Freshman Kyle Minter and sophomore transfer Kevin Walsh led Memphis with two shots a piece in the game. Kerry Mills led Portmarnuck with three shots with two on goal while Craig Bolton, Dave Pepper and Robbie Turpin each had two shots in the game.
