Memphis Defeats the Silverbacks 2-1
April 14, 2007 ATLANTA - The University of Memphis men's soccer team concluded its spring season with a trip to Atlanta to take on the United Soccer League's Silverbacks. The Tigers defeated the professional team 2-1, after putting on an outstanding performance. The Tigers weren't the only familiar faces to Tiger fans. Former Tiger standouts Dayton O'Brien and Andy Metcalf were among those familiar faces on the field. Both players wearing a Silverbacks uniform and competing against their old alma mater. "It was really nice to see Dayton and Andy, " said Memphis head coach Richie Grant. "They both played very well and were a key role in the game. It was good to see them and the lads enjoyed seeing them as well. I hope they have a great future in Atlanta." The Tigers put on an outstanding performance against the Silverbacks, defeating the professional team in the second half. The Silverbacks drew blood first, scoring their goal within 15 minutes of play, making the score 0-1. With 10 minutes left in the first half, Kevin Walsh struck gold scoring the first goal for the Tigers. Jonahan Romero and Wade Wonderlin were key players involved in setting Walsh up for the goal. Romero put in a good tackle and was key in getting Walsh set up for the shot. With the shot, the Tigers tied the game at 1-1 going into halftime. Walsh was on fire today for the Memphis team. Not only did he score the first goal for the Tigers, but he scored the second goal as well. He scored from a free kick in the second half, where he successfully hit the ball over the wall to get a clean shot. His kick gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead on the Silverbacks. On the defensive end, Michael Goodlett was a key player for the Tigers. The freshman goalkeeper had a great performance in the game. Goodlett made some game-winning saves. He controlled his box very well and saved a penalty kick in the last five minutes of the game, giving the Tigers a solid victory. Memphis had several other key performers that helped clinch the victory. Jared Britcher moved from center forward to center back, and was solid from that position. Jordan Lynn had a great performance in the middle. Walsh was exceptional up front, and a key on offense for the Tigers. The Tigers had a great opportunity to close out the season against a team of this caliber and were able to compete against some of the best soccer players in the country. This victory will take the Tigers into next year's season with confidence.
