St. Louis - Former Saint Louis Billikens All-American Brian McBride netted the game winner to lead the U.S. National Team past Mexico 2-0 in the Round of 16 at the World Cup today in Jeonju, Korea.
The U.S. advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time since 1930. The Americans will take on powerhouse Germany on Friday.
McBride put the U.S. on the board in the eighth minute to complete a quick combination. U.S. captain Claudio Reyna beat the Mexican defense to the endline and laid the ball off to forward Josh Wolff at the corner of the six-yard box. Wolff tapped the ball back to an unmarked McBride, who ripped a shot through lunging Mexican defenders and goalkeeper Oscar Perez.
Chevy Man of the Match Landon Donovan added an insurance marker in the 65th minute. Goalkeeper Brad Friedel made six saves in a superlative performance to post the shutout.
