UC Men's Soccer Defeats Marquette, 2-1 in C-USA Tournament
BIRMINGHAM - Junior Ryan Schreck scored the game-winner during the 84th-minute to give the Unviersity of Cincinnati men's soccer team a 2-1 win over Marquette in the quarterfinals of the 1999 Conference USA Championship Tournament.
Cincinnati will now face Saint Louis at 5 p.m. CST on Friday night in the semifinals.
The Bearcats, who trailed 1-0 at halftime on a goal by Ryan Taylor, tied the game during the 59th-minute when junior defender Andrew Kean scored on a pass from senior Johan Cedergren.
Schreck added Cincinnati's final goal 25 minutes later on a pass from freshman Scott Lyons.
"I think the game was very typical of a first round match as there was a lot at stake," said Cincinnati head coach Jeff Cook. "I think we started slow, but settled down in the second half and in the end deserved to win. I give Marquette full credit, they performed well and really showed the strength of Conference USA this season."
The Bearcats (11-5-1) outshot the Golden Eagles (9-5-2) 12-9 and had a 7-2 corner kick advantage.
"I was disappointed that we let the game slip away. They didn't create goals as much we gave them goals. It's a tough way to lose, " said Marquette head coach Steve Adlard.
The win gives UC its first victory in the C-USA tournament since 1996 and its first win over Marquette in three tries in the tournament.
The Bearcats face No. 2 seed and fourth-ranked Saint Louis on Friday at 5:00 p.m. CST.
