PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
OFFENSIVE: Martin Rey, UAB Sr., F, Buenos Aires, Argentina
UAB senior forward MARTIN REY is the Conference USA Offenisve Player of the Week for the period ending Oct. 7. Rey scored the Blazers' first two goals in a 3-0 win over No. 9 South Florida and added a goal and an assist in the 2-0 win over Alabama A&M. Rey has scored six goals in the last six matches and is now tied for seventh on UAB's career goals list with 20.
DEFENSIVE: Clint Baumstark, UAB Fr., GK, Thornton, Colo.
UAB's CLINT BAUMSTARK is the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week for the period ending Oct. 7. He shut out No. 9 South Florida, 3-0 on Oct. 5, recording four saves. He notched his sixth shutout of the year with five saves in a 2-0 triumph over Alabama A&M. Baumstark has six shutouts in nine matches this season.

OVERTIME 49ERS Six of Charlotte's first eight matches this season have gone to double overtime. The 49ers' school record for double overtime matches is seven, set in 1991.
THE WEEK AHEAD In Conference USA action this week, TCU visits Cincinnati on Wednesday for the first-ever meeting between the two programs. East Carolina and Marquette have its inaugural match on Thursday, and No. 9 South Florida heads to the UNC Greensboro Tournament this weekend. The Bulls face No. 11 North Carolina on Sunday.
BLAZIN' DEFENSE When UAB defeated Alabama A&M, 2-0 on Oct. 7, it marked the fourth-straight win for the Blazers, who improved to 8-1 on the year. It was the sixth shutout in nine matches for UAB and freshman goalkeeper CLINT BAUMSTARK. The Blazers are giving up just 0.33 goals per match.
ONE GOAL WONDERS Through matches of Oct. 7, South Florida (7-0) and Saint Louis (4-0) are each undefeated in contests decided by one goal.
2001 C-USA TOURNAMENT The 2001 Conference USA Men's Soccer Tournament will take place Thu. Nov. 15-Sun., Nov. 18 in Tampa, Fla. South Florida will serve as the host institution for the event. The championship game on Nov. 18 will be televised by the C-USA TV Network. Saint Louis is the defending champion after becoming the first team in league history to win an outright regular season title and the conference tournament in the same season with a 2-1 win over UAB in the championship match last season in St. Louis.
CHARLOTTE GEORGE SHEPPARD's two goals helped Charlotte to a 3-0 win at TCU on Oct. 7. LUCAS MACKANOS recorded six saves for his first shutout of the season. Charlotte attempted just five shots on TCU's goal. MIRA MUPIER tallied the other score for the 49ers, as he has now scored at least one goal in each of the last four matches. Last week's victories over Elon and TCU marked the 49ers' first wins in regulation this season. The shutout of TCU was Charlotte's first since a 1-o win over N.C. State on Oct. 29, 2000, and the three-goal advantage was its largest margin of victory since a 3-0 win over Marquette last season. Charlotte hosts Wake Forest on Wednesday.
CINCINNATI Cincinnati is now 2-4-3 following a 1-1 tie with visiting DePaul on Oct. 6. Freshman MATT HAYDEN had the first goal of his career against the Blue Demons. This is the fifth time in the last six years that Cincinnati will have at least three ties in the regular season. The Bearcats host TCU on Wednesday in the first-ever match between the two schools.
DE PAUL DePaul battled Cincinnati to a 1-1 tie on Oct. 6. This was just the second tie in 17 meetings between the Blue Demons and Bearcats. Goalkeeper JEFF LITZKE had seven saves against UC. DePaul hosts East Carolina on Saturday.
EAST CAROLINA No. 9 South Florida held off East Carolina, 1-0 on Oct. 7. ECU had 11 shots on goal but were unable to solve South Florida goalkeeper Troy Perkins, who ranks among the top 10 nationally in goals against average. ECU visits Marquette on Thursday in the first-ever match between the two schools.
LOUISVILLE Marquette handed Louisville a 3-0 defeat on Oct. 7. The Cardinals' JEREMY MORALES recorded three saves against MU. The Cardinals visit No. 8 UAB on Friday.
MARQUETTE Marquette upped its record to 5-3-1 overall and 2-1 in C-USA with a 3-0 win over Louisville. Junior MIKE ROBARDS had the Golden Eagles' decisive goal just three minutes into the match. Marquette has won six of the seven meetings in the Louisville series. The Golden Eagles host East Carolina on Thursday in the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
MEMPHIS Goals by SEAN FRASER and LARS THORSTENSEN were not enough as Saint Louis dealt Memphis a 3-2 defeat on Oct. 6. The Tigers were outshot 13-1 in the second half. Memphis visits Belmont on Tuesday and Marquette on Sunday. Memphis has won two of its last three matches against Marquette.
SAINT LOUIS Saint Louis is off to its best start since 1983 (8-0-0) after a 3-2 win over Memphis on Oct. 6. DIPSY SELOLWANE has scored at least one goal in each of the Billikens' matches this fall. Down 2-1 at halftime, SLU outshot Memphis, 13-1 in the second half. SLU has won all four of its one goal matches this season. The Billikens visit Saint Louis on Saturday.
SOUTH FLORIDA No. 9 South Florida recovered from its Oct. 5 3-0 loss to UAB with a 1-0 victory at East Carolina on Oct. 7. JOE VALENCIA's goal 10 minutes into the match was all USF needed to record its seventh one-goal victory of the season. TROY PERKINS is tied for eighth in the nation with a 0.52 GAA. South Florida heads to the UNC Greensboro Tournament to meet host UNC Greensboro and No. 11 North Carolina this weekend.
TCU Charlotte defeated TCU, 3-0 on Oct. 7. The Horned Frogs outshot the 49ers, 9-4 in the first 45 minutes, but TCU was unable to capitalize. TCU looks to snap its four match losing streak on Wednesday at Cincinnati in the first-ever match between the two schools.
UAB No. 8 UAB defeated No. 9 South Florida, 3-0 on Oct. 5 and Alabama A&M, 2-0 on Oct. 7. The Blazers have now won their last four matches and are 5-0 at home this season. It was the sixth shutout in nine matches for the Blazers and freshman goalkeeper CLINT BAUMSTARK. The Blazers are giving up just 0.33 goals per match. UAB's 8-1 record is its best nine-match start in school history. The Blazers went 7-2 in 1994, 1995 and 1998. UAB has not lost at home in 12 straight matches, going 10-0-2. The last defeat came at the hands of Santa Clara in the 1999 NCAA Quarterfinals. UAB has not lost its last 19 regular season home matches.
