DePaul Defeats Valparaiso, 4-1
The DePaul men's soccer team broke into the win column Friday afternoon at Wish Field as they defeated the visiting Valparaiso Crusdaders, 4-1. Junior Chris Greer led the way for the Blue Demons with a pair of goals and two assists while Ed Kiefer and Shane Hudson also scored.
The Blue Demons got on the board early when Kiefer knocked in a shot from 15 yards out on the right side. Greer and Hudson set up the play with two touch passes before Kiefer sent it to the back of the net at 9:25.
It didn't take long for DePaul to strike again as Greer scored the first of his two goals in the 14th minute. Carlos Mejia sent a ball to the right side of the box and Greer took it out of the air and rifled a shot past Valparaiso goalkeeper Mike Sernal for the score.
The Crusaders cut the lead to 2-1 at 27:59 when Kevin Festerling headed in a corner kick from Jon Flugstad. The score ramained at 2-1 as the two teams headed to the locker rooms for halftime.
In the second half, the Blue Demons didn't waste any time as Greer scored his second goal at 46:23. Maykel Salvatierra served the ball to Robert Marshall at the top of the penalty box. Marshall then dumped it off to Greer on the left side and he sent it past Semal to make the score 3-1.
The final goal of the match came in the 87th minute as Hudson took a pass from Greer and dribbled around the Valparaiso keeper for the final tally. For Hudson, it was his second goal of the year. Greer tallied his fifth and sixth goals of the season and now has five assists.
The season finale for the Blue Demons will be next Wednesday when they host the Marquette Golden Eagles. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at Wish Field.
UAB Wins Another Overtime Match, 2-1 Over Marquette
MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- Jonathan Weimer scored on a header from close range in the 103rd minute to give UAB a 2-1 double overtime
win over Marquette in Conference USA play in Milwaukee, Friday night.
The Blazers now have a seven-match unbeaten streak. They are 10-3-2 overall and 4-1-2 in C-USA. Marquette
fell to 9-7-2 overall and 1-6 in the league.
The winning goal came from inside the box in a mad scramble. Juan Carlos Deras and Rumbani Munthali were
credited with assists. It was the fourth straight road game that the Blazers won in overtime.
The Blazers trailed 1-0 at the half after Marquette's Marshall Morehead rebounded his own miss to score the
goal in the 43rd minute.
That lead stayed until the 83rd minute when UAB's Jermie Frankson scored on a two-on-one break on an assist
from Mike Garcia. It was Frankson's fourth goal in the last six matches.
Both teams attempted nine shots for the match. UAB goalkeeper David Clemente recorded five saves and
dropped his goals against average to 0.93. That is currently the best single season average in UAB history.
