Charlotte Defeats NC State 1-0 in the Big Four Men's Soccer Tournament
Greensboro, NC -- Charlotte defeated NC State 1-0 in the Big Four Men's
Soccer Tournament at UNC Greensboro.
The win marked Charlotte's fourth alltime against NC State and the
first since a 2-1 overtime win in Raleigh, November 1, 1998.
Charlotte improved to 8-7-2 on the season while NC State fell to
2-11-3 on the season.
The only goal of the game came on an NC State own goal. Charlotte
defender Joe Lampert crossed the ball to the far NC State goal post toward
midfielder David McGill. However NC State defender Ross Weikel intercepted
the cross and headed the ball into in his own goal attempting to clear the
ball out at the 51:10 mark of the match.
Charlotte controlled the match as they outshot NC State 22-11 in the
match. Charlotte had several goal scoring opportunities but either their
shots went wide or were stopped NC State goalkeeper Mitchell Watson.
Watson corralled 13 Charlotte shots. While Charlotte goalkeeper John
McDonough posted his fourth shutout of the season on five saves.
Charlotte will conclude their regular season as they host ACC foe
Clemson at Transamerica Field, Sunday, November 5 at 2 pm.
Mens UC Soccer Defeats No. 18 Ohio State, 3-1
CINCINNATI, Ohio (Oct. 29) -- The University of Cincinnati mens
soccer
team defeated No. 18 Ohio State, 3-1, at the Ohio State/Nike Classic in
Columbus, Ohio on Sunday afternoon.
Freshman forward Adam Schauer (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy) scored the
first
Bearcat goal after corralling a cross from forward Myron Vaughn
(Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) and placing a shot low in the right corner of the
back of the net in the 24th minute. The Bearcats continued strong play
throughout the first half, firing nine shots and limiting the Buckeyes to
two.
Ohio State answered at the 58:11 mark, when defender Daryl Brazeau
scored
on an assist from Todd Grossnickles. The Bearcats took the lead for good on
a goal in the 86th minute with a header by sophomore midfielder Scott Lyons
(Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) on a cross by freshman midfielder Brandon Dobbs
(Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills). Vaughn scored his team-leading ninth goal of
the season on a breakaway in the 89th minute to conclude scoring for UC.
"We came out and played well in the first half," said head coach
Jeff
Cook. "We played the second half and little reserved and had to play some
tough defense. This was a hard fought victory against a quality, ranked
opponent."
Seniors Chris Vehr (Cincinnati, Ohio/Roger Bacon), Jamal Frazier
(Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) and Ryan Schreck (Flower Mound,
Texas/Marcus) were named to the 2000 Ohio State/Nike Classic all-tournament
team.
Cincinnati (6-8-2) returns home to wrap the regular season
Conference USA
schedule with Louisville on Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. at Meyers Field.
Jose Rayo Leads Blazers' to 3-1 Win Over Georgia State
Jose Rayo scored two goals before leaving the game with an injury and Flavio Monteiro returned to add a
goal as UAB defeated Georgia State in non-conference soccer action Sunday afternoon at UAB's West
Campus Field.
It was the eighth straight match without a defeat for the Blazers, who are now 11-3-2 overall. Georgia
State fell to 10-8.
Georgia State took a 1-0 lead at the 32:48 mark on a goal by Terrance Johnson. Rayo answered off a
rebound at the 40:37 mark. Rayo scored in the 62nd minute on a header off a throw-in from Mike Garcia.
Monteiro scored for his eighth straight match on a penalty kick at 76:48. Monteiro has missed most of the
season with an injury. "We've played well without Flavio, but now that we have him back, we should be
even better," Blazer head coach Mike Getman said.
Rayo left the game after being injured on a battle for the ball with Georgia State's Scott Mora, who had an
assist on the Panther's first goal. Neither re-entered the game.
It was the final home match of the season for the Blazers. They play at Alabama A&M Wednesday and at
Louisville next Sunday, to finish the regular season.
