C-USA Men's Soccer Roundup
After an important Halloween weekend of competition, five teams have now clinched spots in the six-team 2004 C-USA Men’s Soccer Tournament.
Saint Louis, which has won the last four C-USA Tournament titles, shut out East Carolina, 1-0, on Friday to earn its berth. Will John netted the Billikens’ game-winner in the 35th minute and goalkeepers Pat Disbennett and Jeff Sackman shared the shutout.
Cincinnati scored five big goals against Louisville and the Bearcats improved their conference winning streak to five matches. Jeremiah Gallegos quickly scored UC’s game-winner in the fifth minute, while leading scorer Jeff Hughes fired two quick goals less than a minute apart for the 5-0 final.
Louisville’s loss sent UAB and Charlotte to the tournament field. The 49ers earned a 4-1 victory against DePaul in their conference regular season finale. No. 17 UAB was upset by future conference foe Kentucky, 2-1, on Saturday. USF posted a 1-1 record against non-conference competition. The Bulls defeated Fairleigh Dickinson and lost to No. 5 St. John’s at the Florida International Classic in Miami.
No. 20 Memphis, which was idle over the weekend, had already clinched a tournament bid as well as at least a share of the C-USA regular season title.
