Louisville Eliminates Charlotte On Own Goal
Cardinals advance to semifinals
ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Louisville advanced to the semifinals of the Conference USA
Tournament with a 2-1 victory on an own goal in the first overtime period at
Robert R. Hermann Stadium on Thursday night. The Cardinals advance to play
UAB, a team that defeated U of L, 3-2, just five days ago in Louisville.
The own goal came just six minutes into the first overtime on a redirection
off a Charlotte defender's back five yards out in front of the net.
"It was a tough break for Charlotte. Give them a lot of credit - they
played well. It's just a shame that a game like this has to be settled in
that manner," said Louisville head coach Tony Colavecchia.
"I thought that we played well tonight. It's very disappointing to end that
way," added Charlotte head coach John Tart.
Louisville's Justin Prather opened the game's scoring at the 17:21 mark,
scoring off a penalty kick. The Cardinals made that lead last for most of
the first half, until Charlotte's B.J. Robinson took a pass from David
Pedreschi at the top of the goalie box and pushed it into the net to tie the
match at 1-1.
The victory was the 12th of the season for Louisville (12-8-1), which ties
the school record, set by the 1983 team. "I'm very proud of my team and
very proud of our seniors. It's been a long, winding road to get there.
The players deserve the credit. It's something that we can build on for the
future, a solid foundation for next year", said Colavecchia.
Charlotte finishes the season at 8-9-2.
