Saint Louis Eliminates Memphis, 3-2
Billikens set up championship game rematch with UAB
ST. LOUIS, Mo. - A strong offensive attack by Saint Louis helped the
Billikens advance to the championship game of the Conference USA Tournament
with a 3-2 win at Robert R. Hermann Stadium on Friday night. Saint Louis
will face UAB in the title game, seeking to knock off the defending
tournament champion Blazers and become the first team in league history to
win an outright regular season championship and the conference tournament in
the same season.
Saint Louis out shot Memphis, 19-8, in the match. "Our attack chances were
wonderful," said Saint Louis head coach Bob Warming. "We got a great jump
on them and really had some good chances.
The first Billiken goal came just nine minutes into the match, when Nick
Walls took a pass from Joe Hammes and pushed it into the back of the net.
Memphis countered 10 minutes later when Sean Fraser took advantage of a
defensive mistake and put in a wide-open five-foot shot.
Saint Louis was able to take an advantage into halftime when Brad Davis'
20-yard shot went through the hands of Tiger goalkeeper Clark Talley with
less than three minutes remaining in the opening frame.
"With all of the great saves that he made (Talley) I was very surprised by
the mistake that he made on Davis' goal," said Warming.
Just six minutes into the second stanza, the Billikens built a 3-1 lead when
Jack Jewsbury pushed a rebound shot into an open net from five yards out.
"Nick (Walls) is full of confidence right now, you can just see it out
there. And it couldn't have come at a better time. And Jack Jewsbury is
full of confidence, too. Certainly, Brad (Davis) looked sharp, ' adding
Warming, talking about some of the key contributors to SLU's win.
Memphis closed its scoring off a free kick, as Chris Schmidt took the pass
from Michael Shipman and hit from five yards in front of the net.
"We settled down and played well in the second half. I give a lot of credit
to our guys for playing hard for 90 minutes," said Memphis head coach Richie
Grant.
The loss drops the Tigers overall record to 14-6-0.
Sunday's championship match is set for 2:00 p.m. CST. UAB won last year's
championship battle with Saint Louis, 4-0. Earlier this season, the
Billikens won a 1-0 match over the Blazers in St. Louis.
