C-USA Men's Soccer All-Academic Team Announced

Complete Men's Soccer All-Academic Team Release in PDF Format
IRVING, Texas - Five seniors, including four repeat selections, two juniors and four sophomores were named to the Conference USA Men's Soccer All-Academic Team. The 2008 squad consists of four defenders, five midfielders, one forward and one goalkeeper. All-Conference USA first-teamers Juan Guerra of FIU and Sam Arthur of South Carolina add all-academic honors to their list of awards this year. Guerra, a senior academically but a junior on the field, holds a 3.25 grade point average as an international relations major. Guerra has also started every game for the Golden Panthers this season. Arthur, a CoSIDA Academic All-District nominee, leads C-USA in nearly every major statistical category in overall games. The sophomore is a business administration major and carries a 3.8 GPA. FIU's Phillip Fisher has been tabbed to the All-Academic team for the second consecutive year. Fisher, a communications major with a minor in marketing, has a 3.63 GPA. The senior defender is a team captain for the Golden Panthers and also leads the team in minutes played. Kentucky's midfielder duo of Tyler Burns and Chad Hagerty join the field of all-academic selections. Hagerty, a repeat selection, carries a solid 4.0 GPA while also leading the Wildcats in assists and plans to apply to physical therapy school upon graduation. Burns earns all-academic honors this year with a 3.74 GPA in business finance. C-USA second-team goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer of South Carolina earns all-academic honors as finance major with a 3.9 GPA. The sophomore collected numerous honors this season, including twice being named TopDrawerSoccer.com National Player of the Week in Sept. and was a four-time C-USA Defensive Player of the Week selection. UCF senior Ryan Roushandel, a repeat selection on both the second all-conference team and all-academic team, moved to the defender position and helped the Knights earn four shutouts thus far. Roushandel is a business finance major with a 3.52 GPA. UAB's Dean Sorrell is a double major in Spanish and Biology with plans to go into medial school after obtaining his undergraduate degrees. The junior defender maintains a 3.44 GPA and is the only Blazer to play every minute of every game this season. Tulsa sophomore midfielder Zach Nulisch earns his first All-Academic Team honor. Nulisch garnered 2007 C-USA All-Freshman Team accolades and has scored two goals and two assists for six points this season as a sophomore. SMU landed senior transfer Gabe Arredondo on the All-Academic Team. Arredondo is a geology major with a 3.211 GPA and is tied for a conference-best six assists. Rounding out the All-Academic Team is three-time selection Robert Sausaman of Memphis. The senior midfielder has been on the Tiger Academic 3.0 List in all six of his semesters at Memphis, as well as the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll every season while maintaining a 3.812 GPA as a business finance major. Today kicks off the 2008 Conference USA Men's Soccer Championship at SMU's Westcott Field in Dallas. Four quarterfinal matches start at noon, semifinal action is set for 5 p.m. on Friday and the championship final will be on Sunday, Nov. 16, at 1 p.m. Central.
