With less than two minutes in regulation, Memphis senior Daniel Dobson scored the game-winning goal as the Tigers netted three unanswered goals in the second half to defeat UAB, 3-2, and win their first C-USA Men's Soccer Tournament title.
Dobson scored when Justin Dyer's throw in was headed by UAB's Jason McLaughlin into a scuffle in front of the goal. He capped off the Tigers' second-half rally with a pair of goals from freshman teammate Marcus McCarty.
McCarty scored his first goal in the 51st minute off a deflection from Adam Montgomery, then tied it up with his second goal of the match 18 minutes later. C-USA Offensive Player of the Year and assist leader Dayton O'Brien and Cormac McArdle assisted on the tying goal.
UAB took a 2-0 lead into the half with goals from Jason McLaughlin, who also scored the golden goal in yesterday's 1-0 semifinal win against Charlotte, and Sandy Gbandi.
Following a record day of rainfall in Louisville that postponed action, the 2004 Conferece USA Men's Soccer Tournament presented by Dr. Mark Lynn & Assoc. finally got underway Friday and was played in three consecutive days.
The championship match was televised on the Conference USA Television Network. Don Russell called the play-by-play, and Bill McDermott provided the color commentary. Conference USA's official website, www.ConferenceUSA.com, contains updates, box scores, recaps and photos.
