UAB Advances in NCAA Men's Soccer
Martin Rey made a penalty kick 13 minutes into overtime to lead UAB (14-5) to a 1-0 win over Furman (17-5) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Friday night.
The Blazers, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament , will face the South Carolina Gamecocks Sunday, Nov. 25 at 1:00 CST at Eugene E. Stone Stadium in Columbia, S.C.
UAB has now defeated Furman twice this season and three times over the past two years. The Blazers won 2-1 in Birmingham on Oct. 14 of this year and 2-1 in Greenville S.C. in 2000.
For Rey it was his 11th goal of the season and the 24th of his career, moving him all alone into fourth place on the all-time goals scored list at UAB. He also moved into fifth place on the all-time points list with 62.
Blazer goalkeeper Clint Baumstark, Conference USA’s Freshman of the Year, recorded his ninth shutout of the season, setting a new school record. He came into the match tied with David Clemente, who had eight in 1999, the last time UAB won a first-round NCAA match. Baumstark recorded six saves in the match.
At the 102:39 mark Furman's Moffat Oduor was called for a foul inside the penalty box giving UAB an opportunity to win the match. Rey, taking the penalty kick for UAB, slipped it past goalkeeper Scott Blount to down the Paladins 1-0. Blount registered five saves.
Playing in a very physical match that witnessed a total of 38 fouls, UAB received five yellow cards, while Furman received one. The Paladins outshot the Blazers 17-11. Rey led the Blazers with four shots on goal.
This marks the third meeting between the South Carolina and UAB. The Gamecocks won both of the previous meetings, 1-0 in 1998 in Mt. Pleasant S.C. and 2-0 in 1995 in Saint Louis, Mo.
