Two UC Men's Soccer Players Named Academic All-Americans

Tim Brown

Anders Cedergren and Tim Brown, two University of men’s soccer players, were named 2003 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans on Monday. Cincinnati joined four other universities to lead the Academic All-America Team with two members each.

Cedergren (Sölvesborg, Sweden/Furulundsskolan), a senior majoring in health promotions, has a 3.913 cumulative GPA. He has been a co-captain for three straight years, and is an integral part of the nationally-ranked UC defense that is the best in school history. Cedergren was also named second team All-Conference USA this season, and was a member of the C-USA all freshman team in 1999.

Brown (Wellington, New Zealand/Victoria College), also a senior, posts a 3.722 GPA in graphic design. He is tied for first on the team with six goals and has helped Cincinnati to be ranked as high as 40th in the nation in scoring offense this season. Brown was named to Soccer America Magazine’s National Team of the Week on Oct. 23 for scoring the game-winning goal in UC’s upset double overtime 4-3 victory over then No. 5 Saint Louis, and was named first team All C-USA in 2003. He also earned second team All C-USA honors, first team All-Ohio and third team all-region in 2002, and played on New Zealand’s under-22 national team in both 2001 and 2003. He was inducted into UC's Legion of Excellence in 2003.

“This is a great honor for both Tim and Anders and for our University,” head coach Hylton Dayes said. “These two epitomize the best of student-athletes and we are pleased they have been recognized. It also says a lot about the commitment the UC Athletic Department has made to academics.”

Cincinnati had a record-breaking year in 2003. UC was recognized either regionally or nationally every week of the 2003 season, and was ranked as high as 14th in goals against average. The Bearcats earned only the second NCAA Tournament bid in school history, and won a share of the regular season C-USA title for the first time in the 30 years of the program. The season ended in a 0-0 tie with Kentucky in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Nov. 22.
